Summer camp is more than just a fun activity for kids when school’s out. It’s a chance for children to explore new interests, build their confidence, make friends and discover what’s possible. But too many kids in the St. Louis area don’t have this opportunity. Cost remains the number one factor preventing children from participating in summer programs, leaving thousands of kids without access to enriching experiences that can shape their growth and change their lives.
That’s where generosity can create a ripple effect. Blueprint4 serves as a critical connector in the St. Louis community between families, summer camp programs, and donors, bringing each piece together to help remove financial barriers and open doors. Our search site lists hundreds of free and affordable summer camps for kids. When one child goes to camp, the impact extends far beyond a single week or program. It touches families, classrooms and entire communities. To be a truly thriving St. Louis region, we must make sure every child has access to these supports outside of school!
Opportunity Changes Everything
Parents consistently share how transformative camp experiences are for their children. Kids return home more confident, more curious and more engaged in the classroom. They try new activities, build friendships with peers and relationships with mentors, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had. But for many families, camp simply wouldn’t happen without scholarship support.
One Blueprint4 Scholarship Recipient parent shared: “My son struggled with behaviors, especially at school. It was life changing when he attended the Spark Camp at the Salvation Army Ferguson Community Center. They didn’t just have fun; there was also a lot of character building. My son has completely transformed since attending; even his teachers recognized it.”
Support Where It’s Needed Most
Blueprint4 prioritizes scholarship dollars for youth in St. Louis City and North County because that’s where the need is the greatest. Any money we bring in through donations goes directly to summer camps and programs in the St. Louis area, who in turn use these dollars to give scholarships to kids to attend their camps. This focus allows us to help more children attend camp who would otherwise have limited or no access to summer programming.
Every child deserves access to enriching summer experiences regardless of their zip code or their family’s financial circumstances. By concentrating support where barriers are the highest, generosity reaches the kids who benefit most and ensures that opportunity to attend summer camp and out of school programs is available more equitably.
Impact of Summer Camp on Youth
For kids who may not otherwise have access, summer camp can be a life-changing opportunity. They introduce new possibilities and environments that may not otherwise be accessible. Kids are exposed to different careers, skills and interests that can shape long-term goals. These experiences help level the playing field, giving children access to the same enrichment opportunities as their peers.
Summer programming also helps prevent the “summer slide,” keeping kids engaged academically and socially during crucial months when learning loss can occur. Some summer camps are more academically focused on STEAM (Science, Technology, Math, Arts and Engineering) while others allow kids to explore and be themselves. Most camps include elements of both! Most importantly, all summer programming allows kids to have FUN!

When a child is able to go to camp through scholarships or other giving, the benefits multiply exponentially. They learn new skills and gain confidence while their family experiences relief and gratitude that their child has somewhere safe to learn and grow this summer.
