It’s More Than Childcare: Why Out-of-School Time Matters to Kids and Families

Nov 3, 2026 | Latest News

Out-of-school time (OST) programs play a significant role in helping kids learn and grow. For parents and caregivers, these programs can provide much-needed childcare and peace of mind. For kids, they’re a way to discover new interests, make friends, build confidence, and develop skills that will benefit them for years to come. Blueprint4 was founded on the idea that ALL kids deserve access to these benefits. Our database collects information from all over St. Louis so families can easily search for an opportunity that works for them. We know that access isn’t always easy. Cost, transportation, scheduling, and a lack of nearby programs make choices difficult. That’s why making out-of-school time opportunities available to every child is so important and central to our mission.

Benefits Beyond the School Day

Out-of-school time programs combine childcare, education, and fun so kids can explore their interests and discover what they’re capable of!

Peace of mind for parents – Every parent wants to know their child is safe. After-school and summer camps give kids a place to go when parents and caregivers are working or otherwise unavailable.

According to the Afterschool Alliance, 74% of U.S. parents agree that after-school programs keep kids safe and out of trouble, 75% say they reduce risky behaviors, and 83% say they give working parents peace of mind.

Academic growth – After-school and summer programs give kiddos ways to practice skills, explore new subjects, and discover what interests them. This is especially important for older kids and teens who can really benefit from tutoring or college-prep programs.

Participation in these programs is linked to better test scores and grades, higher school engagement and attendance, and well as fewer absences.

Active kids – From playing sports and spending time outdoors to learning about nutrition and healthy habits, OST programs encourage kids to move, explore, and take care of themselves.

Confidence, friendships, and social-emotional skills – Kids learn important lessons when they’re working together on a project, trying something new, making a friend, or figuring out how to solve a problem. After-school and summer camps help children develop communication, teamwork, decision-making, and relationship-building skills.

Making Opportunities Accessible to Every Family

While the benefits of out-of-school time are clear, finding and participating in programs can be a challenge for many families. Cost, transportation, lack of options, and scheduling conflicts are some of the biggest barriers that Blueprint4 hears from St. Louis families.

Even knowing what’s available can be challenging. Families might not realize where to start looking. That’s where Blueprint4 comes in. By bringing program info together in one searchable database, Blueprint4 helps families discover opportunities that match their children’s interests and their family’s needs. Through community partnerships, camp fairs, resources, and scholarship support, Blueprint4 is also working to reduce financial and informational barriers and connect more kids with enriching experiences.

Where More Programs Are Needed in St. Louis

Access to out-of-school time programs isn’t equal across the St. Louis region. Blueprint4’s 2025 summer data shows that families throughout Greater St. Louis are searching for out-of-school opportunities. However, the availability of camps varies widely by neighborhood.

In particular, families searching in North City and North County see fewer programs in these areas compared to the level of demand. This gap matters. Children should have the chance to participate in enriching activities regardless of their ZIP code.

More programs are needed in underserved neighborhoods so families can find accessible options close to home. Expansion in these communities means more children can benefit from the experiences, relationships, and support that out-of-school time provides.
